Almost three years ago, we got together, played our first gigs, tasting the fun of it all. We found out that good soul music at this day and age still touches people of all ages, not only our own tender hearts...
After a jump start freshly out of the pandemical lockdowns, we soon started writing our own songs and merged them with the regular covers. Fortunately our originals 'survived' the live sets and without hesitation, the aim for a Soul Survivors originals album started to materialize. Naturally, our homebase Rocksupplies Amsterdam became the birth place of it all!
With the album title "The Road Ahead" Soul Survivors is marking its beginning as well as a sublime result of dedication and hard work! We have put our heart and soul into this.
Keep following us on Instagram for updates and news.
Besides Spotify, we are also putting it out on Vinyl which you can buy at your favorite record store.
Also a limited amount of CD's are available as well!
WIth this album release, a promo tour is going on as we speak, look below at our gig list. And be sure to check us out on our socials!
THE PRESS ON 'THE ROAD AHEAD'
Blues Town Music NL - Tom Wouters: “On The Road Ahead, The Soul Survivors manage to maintain their live sound, which undoubtedly ensures an exciting evening of soul music everywhere. Just listening to the album made the flower pots on my windowsill dance.”
Soulandjazzandfunk UK - Bill Buckley : (…) it’s a spirited 10 tracker that betrays the band’s love of real soul’s golden age. The LP is topped and tailed by two big, beefy, brassy cuts. The opener ‘Here We Go Again’ and the closer ‘Love’ are both driven by a classic Northern soul tempo – quite frantic. The album’s other cuts are a little less wild and indeed that helps bring variety and interest, though, throughout, the brash, brass section plays a big part.
Echoes Magazine UK - Chris Wells: “Guitarist Max de Kok and bassman Dimitri Gelens certainly have the knack and whoever’s playing the Rhodes knows what he’s doing too, as you’ll hear on the grooving title song.”
Bluesmagazine NL – Jan Wolf: “Het is een eerste album waar menig artiest enkel van zal kunnen dromen en van een niveau dat menigeen nooit zal bereiken.”
Keys and Chords BE - Philip Verhaege: “The opener ‘Here We Go Again’ and the closer ‘Love’ are driven by that classic Northern soul tempo. Everything in between is heavenly and beautiful soul.”
LA on Lock USA - Travis Erwin (on You're The One): “A Blues infused Retro Soul track probably isn’t what you are expecting to hear coming out of the Netherlands. Though that is exactly what Soul Survivors gives us.”
Neuen Westfälischen Zeitung DE - Edwin Rekate (review of concert Farmhouse Harsewinkel: “Die Sieben Amsterdamer Ausnahme-Musiker, die am wochenende beim Open-Air-Konzert am Farmhouse-Jazzclub das Auditorium locker zum Ausflippen bringen.”

Soul Survivors is a new young band from Amsterdam with a free spirit and a wild heart. The group has immersed themselves in soul, rhythm & blues by mastering all the old soul songs they love. With a setlist full of soul gems, they quickly built up a reputation in the Amsterdam live circuit. The band then used this musical suitcase to write powerful songs of their own. Soul Survivors gave dazzling performances in many Dutch clubs and festivals last season, including Jazz in Duketown, Zoetermeer Blues, Breda Jazz, Jazz by the Sea Domburg and Keifestival Lichtenvoorde. The band has also gained a foothold in Germany in a short time with a growing fan base and performances at a/o Jazzkeller Krefeld, Sol Mülheim a/d Ruhr, Farmhouse Harsewinkel, KIT Düsseldorf and festivals like Spring Jam Kaldenkirchen.
After the release of a 7” 45 rpm vinyl in 2023, the debut album The Road Ahead is now launched with ten soul stompers. The compositions are rooted in the classics from the 60s and 70s by Motown and Stax, but also have a modern soul vibe.
The band has the Rock Supplies in Amsterdam West as its headquarters. This is where guitarist Max de Kok and bassist Dimitri Gelens have a studio where the songs are recorded. The tight Soul Survivors horn section consists of crackerjack trumpeter Pedro Jerónimo and top dog Jeroen van Genuchten on tenor sax. Gifted drummer Steve Cuiper and talended keyboardist Branco Spadon are ready for the big job. Singer Remko Spaaij has that dark soul voice that excites and thrills every room. The band alternates steamy soul songs with blues and rock bangers, think of how the Blues Brothers did it. Soul Survivors gonna take you higher, higher, higher!
